Aliza Ben Baruch, née Alice Evers, was born in Zutphen, The Netherlands in 1923. As a youngster, she learned to draw, and later enrolled in and completed a course in drawing and teaching, receiving her teaching diploma from the Dutch Ministry of Education in 1941. In 1948 she completed her art studies at the Arnhem Art Academy in The Netherlands, specializing in “illustrative and graphic arts”. Her academic achievements were crowned with the award of a degree with distinction. During the years after graduation she worked for the most part as an illustrator of children’s books and gained recognition for her work within this field. Concurrent with these activities, she strove, following the end of the 2nd World War, and as a member of a group of fellow artists, to help develop the course of European art education towards ‘free expression’. She married in 1952, bearing and raising five children, however family life did not prevent her from continuing to develop her career. She continued her work on the illustration of children’s books, features, editorials, and narratives for children’s magazines and journals, such as “Kris Kras”. In her spare time she created her own artistic drawings and paintings. In 1964, she and the family settled in Israel in the city of Ashkelon, where both she and her husband still live today. Living permanently in Israel, Aliza joined the “Association of Painters & Sculptors of Israel”, and still enjoys membership as of today. After her emigration to Israel, she continued her work with passion as an independent artist, and as an art teacher for groups of children at the Ashkelon Art Centre. She has also exhibited her works at numerous art expositions in Ashkelon, Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, Beersheva and Jerusalem. Expositions were dedicated solely to her work, but, also on occasion, to the works of fellow artists. She is highly regarded for her techniques and skills which strongly portray the depth of her honesty of expression in the works she creates. She employs various visual media in her work, such as charcoal, gouache, soft pastels and (wax crayon) panda, and is specialized in graphic techniques such as etching, lithography, monoprint and collography. Horses form an important theme engaged by Aliza repeatedly in her works. This may be attributed to the recollections she has retained of Dutch landscapes she remembers from the period during her youth in The Netherlands. Another theme is the human female. Here she often portrays her subjects with puzzling or even macabre expressions, but always combined with the suggestion of an affectionate and condoning nuance. A great deal of her inspiration is drawn from music, which she transforms, by way of her chosen artistic medium, to figures of performing musicians, or to colourful abstract forms. Her work often suggests “melodies”, and her drawings touch the essence of the psyche, projecting a potency bordering on the bizarre. A selected number of her works, created since 1964, are to be found on her website. In 1993, Ashkelon and its Association of Artists organized a retrospective exposition to honour fifty years of Aliza’s work. Besides in Israel, Aliza’s paintings purchased by foreign private collectors are to be found mostly in The Netherlands, the United States of America and Israel.
